New York City - Residential Units Permitted

Permits for residential units in New York City have increased greatly in the first six months of 2013, compared to the first six months of last year. The residential units permitted through June 2013 totaled 7,320, while the total units permitted for the first half of 2012 amounted to 4,980, a 47% increase.

Furthermore, the residential units permitted picked up significantly in June of this year, with 2,392 units permitted for the month throughout the City. This is the highest monthly total for this year and more than double the previous month, with 1,094 residential units permitted in May 2013.

Almost all of the boroughs experienced noteworthy growths in permit activity with Bronx and Staten Island leading the pack, rising to 723 and 605 respectively. This is in stark comparison to May 2013, where the total permits in the Bronx were 102 and the total recorded residential units permitted in Staten Island were 36.

The number of residential units permitted in the first six months of 2013 exceeds the totals permitted in 2009 and 2010. New housing activity is picking up throughout the City and is expected it to continue in the second half of 2013.

Below, are tables depicting the monthly permit activity for 2013, as well as a table comparing permit totals in the first six months of 2013 to the first six months of 2012.
