No Smoking Buildings in Manhattan

A new program from the American Cancer Society - Healthy High-Rises - is awarding multi-unit residential buildings that pledge to go smoke-free with a highly visible decal. The program highlights a growing trend in the real estate industry that reflects the demand of non-smoking consumers.

Smoke-free multi-unit residential housing is an increasing trend. Research shows that 75 percent of non-smokers prefer no-smoking policies where they live and 50 percent said they would pay more to live in a smoke-free residence according to the American Cancer Society.

Ten Manhattan buildings are slated to be the first recipients of the Healthy High-Rises designation. See list of buildings below.

  1. I would really like to see if this catches on in NYC. We are always talking about how all the condo buildings in Toronto are making us more "MANHATTANIZED"

Don't know if this would fly here or just go up in a puff of smoke.

  3. David, LOL, Mayor Bloomberg has been on an anti-smoking campaign since he's been mayor. First he outlawed smoking in restaurants and bars then parks and now apartment buildings.

    1. This is a crucial step in the health and well being of our children and ourselves! Cigarette smoke permeates throughout buildings and the incidence of asthma and other lung related illnesses is much higher in multi-residence units where smoking is allowed. Some day we will look back on this and shake our heads at how long it has taken to wake up!
