Debra Cooper running for Upper West Side City Council

My friend, neighbor, colleague and state committee woman Debra Cooper is running for the city council seat on the Upper West Side.

Due to term limits the seat currently held by Gale Brewer will be termed out next year. Prior to Gale Brewer, the seat was held by Ronnie Eldridge (wife of journalist and author Jimmy Breslin) and Ruth Messinger.

A long time Upper West Sider, Debra has a long history of community involvement, activism and progressive causes that helped make our community stronger and life better on the Upper West Side.

With the support of Jerry Nadler, Scott Stringer, Eric Schneiderman and Linda Rosenthal, Debra was elected to the Democratic State Committee (DSC) where she represents the interests and concerns of the over 90,000 residents of the 67th Assembly District. Since her election in 2006, Debra has been acknowledged by her colleagues as a strong voice on the DSC.

As both a licensed real estate salesperson and former president of her coop board Debra understands economic development while sensitive to preserving the unique architectural integrity of the Upper West Side. She believes that new buildings should blend into the neighborhood in a harmonious manner.  When she was president of her Co-op Board she worked to insure that exterior repairs and improvements were consistent with the neighborhood’s traditional architecture.

She fought against the West Side Stadium and actively contributed in advancing the West Side’s innovative zoning proposal to protect “Mom & Pop” stores. Debra believes that the West Side should maintain its residential nature with affordable housing where middle class families can raise and educate their children.

A long time advocate of affordable housing issues has led her to become involved with national groups trying to address the foreclosure crisis.

Debra Cooper graduated from Brandeis University and has Masters in Education from Boston College. She raised her family on the Upper West Side. Her daughter Eve is an attorney who resides in Washington,  D.C.  Her older daughter Laura is a video producer and the mother of Debra’s grandson, Lucas.
